About Pilates

“With body, mind, and spirit functioning perfectly as a coordinated whole, what else could reasonably be expected other than an active, alert, disciplined person.”
-JH Pilates

Contrology, developed by Joseph H. Pilates in the early 20th century, is what we know of today as the Pilates Method. It is a system of exercise and physical movement designed to stretch, strengthen, align and balance the body. With systematic practice of specific exercises coupled with focused breathing patterns, Pilates has proven itself invaluable for fitness, wellness, sports training and physical rehabilitation of all kinds. The exercises are performed on the mat (floor) and a variety of classical Pilates apparatus. The spring resistance of the apparatus uniquely translates through the joints, muscles and connective tissue of the body, providing the long, lean muscle quality for which Pilates is known. Movements are coordinated from a strong, flexible core, and flow outward through the limbs.

FAQ’S

HOW DO I START PILATES?

  • If you are new to our studio, you will need to schedule an evaluation session, which will introduce you to the principles of Pilates. The teacher will look at your movement patterns, identify strengths and weaknesses in the body, teach breath and offer a postural analysis. You should expect to learn basic fundamentals to draw upon as you deepen your understanding and knowledge of the exercises. We strongly recommend that all clients begin with at least five Private lessons. These lessons are crucial in laying the Pilates Method foundation from which you will develop. Following your initial lessons, you and your teacher can evaluate the best course of action for you to meet your needs and goals. Over time, we recommend that our clients take a combination and variety of Private, Semi-Private and group classes.

WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT TO SEE FROM PRACTICING PILATES?

  • Joseph Pilates said, “Physical fitness can neither be acquired by wishful thinking, nor by outright purchase.” In other words, with consistent Pilates work, you may begin to feel more energetic and notice improved posture. Over time, you can expect to see and feel more strength and tone, fewer aches and pains, increased flexibility and greater stamina.

WHAT IF I HAVE INJURIES – CAN PILATES HELP ME?

  • The Pilates Method has many variations and approaches, which make it an exceptional way to rehabilitate from an injury. Private lessons are tailored to fit your personal needs. We recommend that you speak with your doctor about Pilates prior to beginning any exercise program.

WHAT DO I WEAR TO MY PILATES SESSION?

  • Wear comfortable clothing that allows for ease of movement. Workout apparel or a snug t-shirt and leggings are recommended. Be sure to wear clothes that hug your body, so the teacher can see where your movements stem from in the body. Only bare feet are acceptable.
